Wednesday, 2 April 2025
We will take a walk through Gilmour reserve - Tunnellers Memorial, Pike River 29 Miners Rest, development of the park. Then a loop around Union Hill taking in the vent shaft, the pachuca tanks, the battery site, Mineral Resources tailings ponds, environmental restoration, going via the Millstream walkway with its various features - butterfly garden, bamboo grove and Speak's Quarry.
This is a moderate-easy walk with no steep grades. Good walking shoes are essential, and you may want to bring a bottle of water and a camera.
We will finish back at George Street carpark.
Following this tour there are various other walks in the area, if you have further time to explore:
The walkway around the base of Black Hill follows the Ohinemuri River for most of the way. Also an option to go up to Black Hill Lookout. The river continues on through the Karangahake Gorge.
Waihi’s Martha Mine Pit Rim Walkway/Cycleway is a most enjoyable walk that starts at the Waihi Information Centre and also ends there.
