Ōtanewainuku Trig plus Rimu and Whataroa Falls Track
Monday, 7 April 2025
Hikers will begin with the Summit Loop, ascending through original native forest to panoramic views that highlight the region’s natural beauty. They then meander through the Rimu Loop, surrounded by towering Rimu trees and rich biodiversity, before resting by the stunning Whataroa Waterfall, where the sound of cascading water provides a serene backdrop, ideal spot for lunch and a refreshing swim, if that is your liking.
This journey not only showcases the forest’s ecological wonders but also offers participants an opportunity to learn of the forest history and the current conservation efforts.
Hans Pendergrast will share his extensive local knowledge and outline the work of the Ōtanewainuku Kiwi Trust to protect and restore the indigenous ecosystem and biodiversity of Ōtanewainuku. The Trust’s vision is “WHEN THE FOREST FLOURISHES THE PEOPLE FLOURISH.” You will experience this as you enjoy your walk through the forest.
Note: The Ōtanewainuku Forest car park is equidistant from Oropi, Tauranga and No 2 Road, Te Puke.
